research areas

The Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics (CBMG) offers a highly interactive research environment and outstanding research facilities, including the new Bioscience Research Building. Laboratories in CBMG and affiliated departments and institutes at the University of Maryland are active in the following areas of research.

Each area offers unique opportunities to undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral investigators to perform original research and pursue rigorous training in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. For more information about graduate program please go to BISI graduate program.

The University of Maryland recently reorganized its biology graduate programs. The Molecular and Cell Biology (MOCB) and Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics (CBMG) programs are no longer accepting applicants as independent programs. Please explore those interests in concentration areas within the new Biological Sciences (BISI) graduate program.

Genetics and genomics

The Genetics and Genomics specialization area provides rigorous training in the molecular and genetic analysis of fundamental molecular and cellular processes.

Microbiology, Microbial Pathogenesis, and Immunology

The Microbiology, Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology specialization concentrates on the study of host-pathogen interactions at the molecular and cellular levels.

cell and developmental biology

The Cell and Developmental Biology specialization concentrates on the study of how cells are constructed, how they accomplish their specific tasks, and how they assemble and cooperate with each other.

VIROLOGY

The Virology specialization is designed to train students broadly with the goal of producing graduates that have an understanding and professional level of expertise that encompasses the full breadth of virology.

PLANT biology

The Plant Biology specialization provides rigorous training in broad areas of plant biology.
