New Users Guide
Instructions for Prospective Confocal Users
1. Download an application form, fill it out in detail and email it to Amy Beaven (abeaven@umd.edu). You will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of experience in microscopy and an immediate need to use the microscope(s) before you will be considered qualified to schedule a training session. Upon receipt of the completed application, you will be contacted regarding training within 2 days.
- Zeiss LSM 710: Training for the LSM 710 takes 3-4 hours. Users who wish to image their own samples during training should request a 4-hour session.
- Leica SP5 X: Requires 2 training sessions. Depending on the user's level of experience, the first session will take 2-3 hours and will include an overview of the operation of the microscope using facility training slides. The 2nd session will take 2-4 hours and the user is required to bring his/her own samples to image. Advanced techniques will be discussed if desired (e.g. lambda stacks, FRAP, FRET etc.). Users are required to complete the 2nd training session no more than two weeks after the first session.
2. If you do not have an Oracle Calendar account, request a single account from OIT.
3. Prospective Leica SP5 X users should review the Leica SP5 X Quickstart Guide before attending the first training session.
4. Arrive on time for your training session (0107 Microbiology building). If you are more than 15 minutes late, the training session will be cancelled and you will be charged at the regular rate for the full length of the scheduled appointment.
